Finding somewhere to hunt is hard anymore. Me and some buddies contact some people we knew about some abandoned farm land. Here in mountains of western north carolina bird hunting of any variety is a challenge. We cleared some thickets of briars and saplings with tractor, bush hog, subsoiler, disked many times, let it sit for a few days, sprayed it with round up then planted and lightly disked it in. We done this on 6 different locations over 4 years. We didnt lime and fertilize to specs because of budgets but we did apply some. We brought birds 250-400 birds to every field we planted every year for opening day. These were 1-3 acre fields with nothing nowhere to attract them in the mountains. Old orchards that had been pushed up, various scenarios and we had the birds! It is best to use their rate because planting too thick will cause crop to fight itself too much and if theres more space in field the plants are healthier and birds can eat off bare ground better, which they seem to prefer. Weather hurt us a few years and lack of motivation the last few. I raised and sold a litter of lab puppies this winter and myself and owners want something to work our dogs over all summer so the dogs were used to surroundings/ hunting cover and fall for doves and I knew right where to start.Wortht he money great results. have areas sprayed first week of may and prep and plant second week of may. dont drag your feet or you'll kick yourself later~!
